#KITEMaskChallenge Gallery

Gr. 9 Visual Arts – #KITEMaskChallenge Project

Since March, we’ve helped stop the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our masks, practicing physical distancing, and maintaining proper hand hygiene. At KITE, we care about the safety of each and every member of our community. Now, we want to encourage you to inspire others to do the same. (source)

This on-going initiative from the University Health Network continues to be vital in raising awareness on stopping the spread of this deadly virus. Our class, with the support of our community partner KITE, shall venture into our own take of the #KiteMaskChallenge through the creation of self-portrait drawings that aim to explore the perspective of young people during the COVID-19 global pandemic. The gallery below represents our students’ work.

My artwork is about how to stay away from the virus. In the mask, it has a drawing of 2 meters and 6 feet apart. The reason I put it is because it is also important that we are far away from people and follow the 2 meters and 6 feet apart social distance. Wearing a mask can make a difference for the people I love, my friends, neighbours and my community. We have the ability to protect older family members and protect those close to us who have health issues. Wearing masks can reduce threats to our community’s essential workers, including medical personnel, who’ve shown their community to our safety, health and well-being. By combining social distancing and washing our hands with the use of a face mask all of us can be protected from the virus.

The questions asked were why we wear masks and who do we wear them for. When I think about this I think back to when we first started wearing masks and how much I didn’t like wearing them and that I didn’t want to wear them but now that we have been dealing with covid for a little while I understand how critical it is to use them. I wear a mask because it can help protect people from covid and I wear masks so that my grandparents will stay safe and so that my parents and siblings can stay safe because sometimes people don’t realize how bad it is when we are at home in lockdown but wearing a mask can make it better it is a little thing that everyone can do to help keep everyone safe from covid. That’s what wearing a mask means to me.

My self-portrait is about wearing a face mask. I wrote the words “Wear the face mask” because it goes to show how important it is for everyone to be wearing a mask during this pandemic. I wear my face mask to protect myself, my family, my friend and everyone else in the community. This pandemic is a big deal and it’s time people help take control back by simply wearing a mask so everyone can stay safe.

The art that I drew is a portrait of myself during these trying times wearing a mask displaying how much our lives have changed as the simplest tasks require us to wear a mask. I’m wearing a mask not only to protect myself but to protect my family friends and anybody I encounter.

My portrait is spreading the word of following the rules provided by the government. If we can follow these rules as a community the cases will start to go down, and give the government and health workers more time to decide what they will do next. If we can follow the rules it may even give the government enough time to get the vaccine out. If we all can follow the rules such as staying home, wearing masks when we go out, and social distance we can protect our family and friends. We need to help each other and work through this together for a better future.

My artwork is about the importance of wearing a mask during this pandemic. Wearing a mask is very important to me because other than wanting to protect myself, I want to protect the people around me and keep them safe. I wear a mask to protect my family, and my friends because I would feel terrible if I were the reason to give them COVID-19 by not following the proper precautions. My portrait has a special quote on the mask from Edward Albert which is “The simple act of caring is heroic.” I put this quote on my mask because I believe that caring for others by wearing a mask is heroic and is something that we all need to do during these times. We all need to care for each other and by doing that, we can have a better tomorrow!

My artwork is a self-portrait, in my self-portrait, I included a message on my mask that reads “STAY STRONG WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.” I chose this message because we all need to stay strong during this pandemic, and we are all in this together because it’s true, we are. We are all experiencing different feelings, and we need to remember to stay strong and there are people around us that will care for us.  We need to work together by keeping our distance from each other, wearing masks, washing our hands, and not gathering with people outside of our household. If we do all these things, it shows that we care and want to fight hard to beat this pandemic. Wearing a mask is one way to keep ourselves and each other safe. We need to wear a mask for ourselves, for our family, and for everyone around us, to keep us safe. We need to stay home, wear masks when we go out,  wash our hands, and keep our distance from each other to limit the spread of Covid-19. We have to stay strong and work together because if we can overcome this,  we can overcome anything that comes our way.

I wear a mask for all the healthcare workers who are dealing with the strain and stress of covid. Both my mom and dad are frontline healthcare workers so I know first hand about the stress they go through. They have to wear masks for their 8-12 hour shifts and only get to take them off to eat and drink. So the least we could do is wear a mask when we leave our house.

My Artwork is about is about why wearing a mask is important. We are in a pandemic and everywhere we go, there is danger all around us. It’s been like this for about 9 months now and I think people are starting to cooperate and realize that life isn’t going back to normal for quite some time. Many people are dying and getting very sick. But wearing a mask protects us from all that. It acts as a shield and that nothing can get in its way. Even though it’s just a tiny piece of fabric that goes around your mouth, it’s a lot more than that and it saves lives.

The only way that life we now know will return to normal is if we do our part to wear a mask, social distance and be safe. Do these things wisely because it may not just cost your life but another persons as well.

I think everyone can contribute to this so I believe that we can beat Covid-19 with our help and wearing our masks.

In my portrait, I wanted to include 2 very big problems in the world right now; racism and Covid-19. On one side of my mask, I wrote “wear a mask & save lives” because around 2.3 million people have died worldwide from the Corona Virus and some people are still not wearing masks and following restrictions and safety precautions, which will only cause more cases and deaths. To me wearing a mask means protecting my family and other people from the virus.  On the other side of the mask, I wrote some of the names of unarmed black people who didn’t deserve to die in such a cruel way and still deserve justice.

Vince H.
My artwork is about wearing masks, why do I need to wear a mask? Well, it’s important to wear a mask these days, because we’re in the middle of a pandemic, and it’s for your own good to keep you safe. Based on my research,1.9 million people died from the virus, so this is not a joke, we have to take this seriously because the virus can be deadly. I hope that for those people who do not listen to the rules, I meant by that, to those people who don’t wear masks, please, this is a reality we’re living in, so please wear a mask it’s not that hard. Us people are the ones preventing the virus, and you know what stops the virus? Follow the rules, stop the spread. We need 2021 to be back to normal.

To me, wearing a mask shows how much you care. Care about your family, friends, neighbours and all of their friends and families. It shows how you have a strong sense of justice and how you are kind, courageous, caring, truthful- and most of all a good person. I think we all agree that masks are not fun to wear at all. They make you hot and are generally uncomfortable. But that’s why it shows how persevering you are. Doing something you don’t want to for the sake of others. Personally, I wear a mask for all of my friends and their friends, my neighbours who always ask how I am, and especially for my family and sick family members. I do it to protect myself and my loved ones. As I wrote in my drawing, masks save lives and they really do.

Kylie K.
In my portrait, the mask is telling the audience a very straightforward message: “stay home” and “stay safe.” The reason why we should stay home is that we are trying to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the virus. The only time we should be going out is to buy essentials and that is a good time to wear a mask which will, again, protect ourselves and loved ones from the virus. The mask on my portrait also says “stay safe.” This means to constantly sanitize and wash our hands, to social distance, and also stay home. At the end of the day, these two messages all come back to one thing which is protecting ourselves and our loved ones from the virus and that is the whole point of my portrait.

Sydney K.
My portrait project is spreading the message on wearing masks to keep everyone safe. Wearing a mask, to me, means to protect myself, my family, friends and everyone around me. I wear a mask to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We all need to start to truly recognize how many people have had their lives taken or been seriously affected because of Covid-19. This pandemic is just getting worse and wearing masks now more than ever and staying apart from others can be the things that allow the pandemic to be slowly controlled.

Nandita K.
This artwork promotes keeping safe by putting on the mask. In this artwork, I have drawn myself wearing a mask and protecting other people by being safe. Wearing a mask to me means saving many other people’s lives. I think everyone should do their part as well to stop the spread of Covid-19 and wear masks. I am wearing this mask for all the healthcare workers and the elderly who are constantly dying from this virus. If I wear this mask then it means that I could prevent someone’s death or spreading a virus to more people.

Adrianna L.
My portrait is portraying the fact that doing something as easy as wearing a mask will save lives. Masks are ultimately a simple barrier to help prevent your germs from reaching others. You should wear a mask, even if you do not feel sick. This virus has taken a huge toll on many lives and will continue to if we don’t help to prevent it by distancing from others, as hard as it may be and wearing a mask. Wearing masks will not only keep others you care about safety but also yourself. Wearing masks is more crucial than ever as the pandemic continues to heighten and we continue to lose more lives. Overall, I am wearing the mask for myself, my family, my friends, frontline workers, and everyone around me. Even if you don’t know it, wearing a mask will save a life.

Connor L.
My artwork is about the importance of wearing a mask. To me wearing a mask is very important because it helps stop the spread of COVID-19 to friends, family, and just people in general. Not wearing a mask can cause so much damage and can cause such mayhem for something so simple so please just wear a mask! I am wearing a mask because I want to try and help my community by stopping the spread of this virus, I do this not only for myself but because I do not want to hurt or cause any more deaths to anyone I know and love such as family members and friends. My quote “People are not invincible stay home” means that nobody is immune to the virus and anyone can get it so don’t go trying to live life as if the virus isn’t a thing because it will only cause more deaths. By doing this we can stop this virus. Remember this is our future we are trying to fix so we cannot mess it up or future generations will be in trouble.

At the virus pandemic time, everyone is afraid of getting the virus, but there is a kind of person who abandons themselves, puts on protective clothing, puts on masks, and goes to the front line to work. They are medical personnel. Are they superman? Are they don’t afraid of viruses? No, they aren’t. They are just boys or girls who have shouldered the heavy responsibility of defending their homes and nations. They not only wear masks to protect themselves and others but also to protect the sick. Because they are angels, when they are safe, then they have the energy to take care of the sick. Let’s put masks on, not only for us and our family but also for doctors and nurses that still work in the front line. So the mask in my self-portrait, the identity of this girl in life maybe is daughter, mother, friend, but when she wears protective clothing and masks, she is a hero.

My artwork is a self-portrait with reference to wearing masks. In the portrait, my mask has the message “Keep Calm, Carry On.” During this pandemic, we need to realize that we need to stay alert, but also calm. To me, I wear my mask to show I am respectful and careful. When I wear my mask I show that I not only care about myself but for others as well. Doing so makes sure that I won’t transmit the virus and contribute to the global effort in stopping the spread.

Clare P.
My artwork is a self-portrait about how to protect yourself from Covid-19. Written on my mask is “wear a MASK or stay HOME” and I decided to choose this short message because it is very important to wear a mask when you are in public areas. In my opinion, wearing a mask means that I am protecting all those that I come in contact with including my friends, family, and other people that I might be associated with. I’m not only wearing a mask to protect my friends and family but I’m also wearing it to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 because just like many others I would like this pandemic to come to an end. For these reasons, this is why my artwork is about wearing masks and why it’s so important to do so.

Luke P.
The reason I wear a mask is to protect people around me from getting sick. I don’t want to wear a mask everywhere I go but it is fair to everyone around me. Another reason I wear my mask is to try and stop spreading the virus and trying to help the pandemic end quicker.

This is a self-portrait that I have created using the grid method. The grid method itself is very useful in many different ways like drawing and painting. This method breaks everything down into bits and pieces so it’ll be easier and more accurate to draw/paint. To me wearing a mask means that you care for yourself and the others around you. I wear my mask because I care about my family and friends, and I want everyone to be safe during these difficult times. The meaning behind my portrait drawing is to inform people to stay safe during these tough times.

Tiffany R.
It is more than important to be thinking about others and their well-being during this unprecedented time, and that is exactly what my artwork is about. Wearing a mask is one of the ways you can take care of the people around you. I wear my mask because I care about my family, the people in my community who may be immunocompromised, and the healthcare workers. Doctors and nurses have given up their safety to save others every single day. We can help them by staying at home to help reduce the number of people getting sick. It’s understandable that teenagers may want to hang out with their friends and have fun, but right now, is really not the time.  Everyone has to work together in order to get this virus under control. So please stay inside and don’t go out unless it’s essential.  At the end of the day, it really is in our hands, and what we do from this point on will determine how soon we can return to normal life.

Biaggio S.
I wear my mask for my safety and for the safety of others everywhere I go.  I am trying to build awareness and show that we can only stay safe and stay healthy by wearing our masks and that we have to stay home through this pandemic.  Wearing a mask is a very big part of our way of looking out for each other.  Even though it was hard at first, if I learned anything from this pandemic is that you have to be patient and hopeful.  I think we can all have a better tomorrow and once this pandemic is over it will be history and everyone will have learned a lot from what we went through.  The silver lining at the end of this very bumpy road is that we all did it together and we never should lose hope.  We will have a future if we continue to wear a mask and stay home, because “I Stay Home For You”.

Rosha S.
My artwork is about the importance of wearing a mask. Wearing a mask does not only protect you but protects others around you. Wearing a mask means that I can help protect other people from the virus as well as myself. I wear a mask because I want to protect the people around me, especially my friends and family. More than 1.9 million people have died shows how deadly and serious this virus is. The message that I wrote on my mask was “Stay Safe”. This message is extremely important at this time because of how serious the virus is. To Those who refuse to wear a mask because they think that it is pointless, I would like them to think about all of the people that they are putting in danger and also themselves. So please wear a mask so that we can stop the spread of this deadly virus and bring 2021 back to normal.

This is a self-portrait I made to promote wearing a mask.  I wrote unity on my mask because it will take all of us to work together to stop the spread of Covid-19.  I also drew the earth on my mask because people all around the world are affected by this pandemic and we are all in it together.  Although the pandemic has been hard on everyone, I believe that we will learn from this pandemic and will have an even greater future after it.

I wear my mask for my friends and family and everyone near me cause I don’t want to make my friends and family in danger and get the virus and it is good with the cold as well cause the mask can block the wind so its good for the cold weather here in Canada.

We can spread awareness from tweeting because the new generation is used to the online world and seeing people that are in a different city or even different country so one is to tweet it on your social media. The other thing we can do is that just every time you see someone like your friends and family just tells them to wear a mask and why and they will listen to you.

What we can learn is that we have to have ourselves healthy and be sick and go somewhere like i know if you were sick you would say i’m fine and just go to work or school but now you might stay at school and take a day off and you should wash your hands frequently . we can cause if we keep our masks on we can not get it and then like after 4 months there will be a covid 19 vaccine and then everything will be normal.

The silver lining is that we are now growing like people do more things online like get your food or talk to people so we are growing to the new generation. The other thing is that we will be more healthy and wash our hands more than usual.

Emily W.
My artwork is a self-portrait about wearing masks anywhere you go. It is important for your well-being and the people around you to wear a mask. With the new orders, we should only be going out for essential reasons. At first, I didn’t like wearing a mask but I understand the meaning behind them. By wearing a mask you are protecting yourself and your family from the virus.  The hospitals are struggling with an overwhelming amount of people who are needing their help. We all need to work together to keep us safe and to beat the pandemic. We also have to keep social distance and not travel to see family and friends for the time being. It is very difficult to be isolated for this long, but we are not out of the woods yet. We have to do the hard things and stay home. Go out only for necessary things.

Wearing masks is our new normal and we have to get used to the fact that if you want this to end, we have to keep wearing a mask and go out only for essential reasons.
