  • Sentinels Logo Pt. 4. Just add ice.

Speculative work in graphic design refers to creating visual materials or design concepts for a client or project without a guarantee of payment. It often involves submitting design proposals, mockups, or completed work as part of a competition or job application, hoping to win a contract, project, or employment. This practice is also known as “spec work” or “working on spec.”

For our school’s renaming and re-branding efforts, Mr. Galang began a journey of creating spec work based on the new Sentinels moniker. Though created as if it was being submitted for consideration, the whole purpose of this exercise was to demonstrate to all his design students how to submit, format and present design ideas to potential clients.

For this design, there was a conscious effort to move away from the knight concept and anything demonstrating weaponry and violence. The integrated “S” and “H” are shaped like a shield. As an instrument of protection, the shield is an apt symbol for protecting what is most important to our school - Faith, Hope and Love!

Mr. Galang’s senior Media Arts students in semester two will delve deeper into branding with a bit more purpose and specificity. We hope that this spec work will pave the way for his students to understand that branding is more than just creating “cool” logos.

As for the real competition for our Sentinels logo, we look forward to our student submission winner in the coming year! Go, Sentinels, go!
